Fremont, California - March 2, 2005 - Hurricane Electric, a leading Technical Service
Provider, announced
today that it has added several new antispam email options to its web hosting and
dedicated server accounts that will dramatically reduce the amount of spam its customers
receive.
Hurricane Electric is continuously researching new technologies to help its users eliminate spam. The new antispam technologies that Hurricane Electric now offers include Greylisting, Sender Email Address Validation, Virus Blocking, and MX+. Greylisting is an antispam technique that requires people who send mail to be running legitimate mailservers that are RFC 2821 compliant. Sender Email Address Validation is an antispam technique that insures that the return email address is valid and rejects all mail sent from invalid email addresses. Because a large percentage of spam includes viruses, Virus Blocking will help cut down on spam by blocking all windows executables that may contain viruses. In addition, this technology will help to eliminate the possibility of catching new viruses before they are identified. Finally, MX+ is an antispam technique that involves making sure the sender domain matches the MX record of the domain in the envelope from, or the reverse DNS of the sending IP is a subdomain of the domain used in the envelope from. If neither matches, the email is rejected. "We conducted extensive tests on numerous antispam techniques," said Mike Leber, Hurricane Electric president. "These are the most robust antispam techniques we could find. They will give our users excellent ways to eliminate spam while avoiding the side effects associated with traditional antispam techniques that give false positives." During testing, Hurricane Electric realized an 80% drop in spam with the use of the Greylisting antispam technique alone. With all four antispam techniques enabled, it is projected that users will see a 98% reduction in spam.
